On the road

The key rules of this unit in two minutes. Tap the speaker to hear each example.

Me duele, me duelen

“Doler” (to hurt) works like “gustar”: the verb matches the thing that hurts. Use the article, not “my”: me duele la cabeza.

  • Me duele la cabeza. My head hurts.
  • Me duelen los pies.My feet hurt.

Polite requests with usted

With strangers, staff and officials, use “usted”: ¿Me puede ayudar?, ¿Puede repetir? It takes the same verb form as él and ella.

  • ¿Me puede ayudar, por favor? Can you help me, please?
  • ¿Puede hablar más despacio? Can you speak more slowly?

Getting attention

“Perdone” and “disculpe” both mean “excuse me” when you want to ask someone something. “Perdón” on its own is more like “sorry”.

  • Perdone, ¿dónde está la estación?Excuse me, where is the station?
  • Disculpe, no entiendo.Sorry, I don’t understand.
