Jobs have two forms
Most job titles change with the person: profesor/profesora, camarero/camarera. Words ending in -ista or -e often stay the same: el/la periodista, el/la estudiante.
- Soy informática.I work in IT. (woman)
- Mi hermano es enfermero. My brother is a nurse.
No article after “soy”
Like in German, you say your job without “a”: soy profesora, not “soy una profesora”.
- Soy camarero.I’m a waiter.
- Es médica.She’s a doctor.
On the phone
Spaniards answer with “¿Dígame?” or “¿Sí?”. To say who you are, use “soy”: Soy Ana.
- ¿Dígame?Hello?
- Hola, soy Ana. ¿Está Lucía?Hi, it’s Ana. Is Lucía there?
